Visceral Manipulation/Visceral
Mobilization - is a gentle manual therapy technique for
evaluation and treatment of internal organs (viscera) and their interconnecting
tissues. It utilizes the light application of specifically directed
pressures to attain unrestricted movement and to normalize tone and
function of the organ, its ligaments and surrounding connective tissues.
Visceral mobilization locates the origin of the problem and addresses
it specifically. Restrictions in movement may occur due to traumatic
injury, strain, repetitive mechanical or physiological stress.
Excessive tightness of the organ tissue, deviations from normal resting
positions of the organ and abnormal associations (adhesions) between
organs and their connective tissues, may produce tissue strain, at
times in areas quite distant from the restriction. Due to the relationship
between movement of the viscera and various elements of musculoskeletal
system, visceral restrictions can cause postural deviations, chronic
pain and limitations in mobility of the joints of the spine and extremities.
Joint mobility problems and pain can persist or worsen despite intensive
treatment for this area because it is caused by restricted mobility
of an internal organ. In cases like this, traditional physical
therapy will only partially be effective, generating some improvement
but with recurrence of symptoms because the treatment is focused on
the symptoms of the chain of dysfunction,
not the cause of it. Visceral Manipulation
techniques are extremely effective following abdominal or thoracic
surgery, traumatic injuries, thoracic outlet syndrome, shoulder pain,
low back pain, respiratory and abdominal infections, chronic gastro-intestinal
tract disorders, stress incontinence and following pregnancy and childbirth.
At Power in Motion, we enhance the recovery of our patients by skillfully
utilizing a wide variety of Manual Physical Therapy techniques.
With a preference for Integrative Manual Therapy as a most effective
therapeutic approach, we continuously broaden and advance our training.
